Skills, Capabilities and who I have learned from.

It is very easy as a creative to fall in to the trap of thinking you and you alone are the one who has created magic. But this is never true. Nothing and no one exists in isolation and everything is connected. Our teachers shape us, influence our thinking as they pass on their wisdom and experience. I have been extremely fortunate to have worked with some of the great artists and thinkers of the 21st Century. What I have learned, I use in my life and work everyday. I hope I never stop learning…

CONNECTING WITH AN AUDIENCE ON AN EMOTIONAL LEVEL IS WHAT I ASPIRE TO. THAT IS THE ULTIMATE KEY TO BUILDING AFFECTION, AND LOYALTY. EMPATHY AND IMAGINATION ARE THE TWO CRITICAL CAPABILITIES NEEDED  TO ACHIEVE THIS. PHOTOGRAPHY AND VIDEO ARE THE TWO MEDIUMS WHERE I FIND THIS IS MOST FREQUENTLY ATTAINED.

Milton Glaser

Designer, Illustrator, Artist and Philosopher

I couldn’t possibly list what I have learned from Milton Glaser on this page. I have know him for almost 30 years.  He has mentored me since we met in 1990. During the ten years I worked with him, I learned the most. I can only describe it as the closest thing to being the sorcerers apprentice! The research involved for Art is Work – his second book on design, initiating his archive, and organizing exhibitions around the world all the while working on all his major accounts with him and auditing his teachings at SVA, allowed me to soak up and absorb so much I have been changed forever. Ten Things I’ve Learned is the title of a book we once discussed doing. Maybe it will still happen. Milton’s essay by the same title, was the basis for it and a very good read if you would like to know the ten most important things Milton has learned! OPEN PDF

This photograph of Milton, his wife Shirley and I was taken at my wedding lunch at La Giarra. The lunch was a wonderful gift from Milton to James and me on our City Hall wedding day. Although we had no immediate family in New York he made up for it by inviting the entire studio family and everyone we knew.

James McMullan

I studied High Focus Drawing with Jim at the School of Visual Arts, practiced at the Society of Illustrators life Drawing sessions run by Victor Juhasz at the time, and had private direction at our studio on 32nd Street. What I learned from Jim was multi-faceted. The most remarkable thing I learned was just how many things your brain is capable of doing and thinking about at once and how drawing from life is a most powerful means of igniting this high level of energy and activity.

David Eustace

I have been very fortunate to have worked with David Eustace on a couple of fascinating projects over the years. I have to credit him with being the one who has influenced my photography most profoundly. Milton always told me that the best teachers are those who live what they do and David is most definitely that. Simply by observing his photographs, watching him as he works and listening to him talk about his passion is an education in itself.

I have always been in awe of Adam’s ability to turn the ordinary into the extraordinary, the simple and everyday into the poetic and moving. His framing, composition, sense of light combined with natural storytelling and empathy for the people he is capturing consistently creates gripping, moving works.

Charles Rennie MacIntosh’s famous Glasgow School of Art (GSA)

I graduated from this incredible art school in 1990, the year that Glasgow was the European City of Culture. Michael Healy, Painter and the Head of Graphic Design Department when I attended was instrumental in introducing me to Milton Glaser by selecting me as the intern to represent GSA. I learned so much and will always be indebted to the school for their pivotal role in my development as an artist and a designer.

There are many others I have worked with over the years that have taught me things that are invaluable to my work. They include, Cannon Garber and Brad Stackhouse (Interpersonal Intelligence), Joe Hall (design business), Pamela Bailey (PR and communications), John and Ian (advanced design software), Kim Cortes (HTML coding).
